Beat the Heat - with these great tips
Beat the Heat - with these great tips

Can you believe the first official day of summer is practically here? While we're all looking forward to longer days and sunny skies, for pregnant mamas, those rising temperatures can feel a bit... intense. Feeling like a personal furnace when you're expecting is a super common experience, and trust me, so many of us can totally relate.

So, how do we beat the heat during a summer pregnancy without sacrificing all the fun? We’ve pulled together five fantastic tips for staying cool this summer while pregnant. These aren't just things picked up from personal experience, but also some great advice found from reputable resources.

STAY HYDRATED

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day

  • If you are perspiring heavily due to the heat, make sure you are replacing the electrolytes you are losing with sources such as electrolyte infused water and sports drinks.

  • There are good food sources too; think about incorporating refreshing fruits and veggies with high water content like watermelon, cucumbers, and berries.

Wear Cool Clothing

  • Cotton and linen are great breathable fabrics vs. synthetics

  • Wear light colors and ditch restrictive pieces and choose loose and comfy clothing

Beat the Heat

  • Avoid direct mid-day sun and always wear sunscreen.

  • A cool, damp washcloth applied to the back of your neck, your forehead, or the top of your head is also a good way to keep your body temperature down.

  • Don't underestimate the power of a refreshing spritz bottle filled with water – keep one in your bag for an instant cool-down on the go!

Adjust your exercise

  • Exercise at the coolest times of the day and avoid exercising to the point of overheating

  • Swimming can keep you cool and takes some weight off your sciatic nerve

Chill out and put your feet up

  • Don’t push yourself. Give yourself permission to relax in a cool room with your feet up.

  • A cool foot soak at the end of the day can work wonders. Or, take it a step further and relax with a cool bath and your favorite relaxing music
